🎬 Asahi SMC Takumar 55mm F2 Cine-Mod Vintage Prime Lens – Canon EF Full Frame

A professionally modified Asahi SMC Takumar 55mm F2 vintage prime lens, prepared by TerPhoto for cinematography, filmmaking and professional video production. This cine-mod combines the distinctive optical character of a classic Japanese Takumar with practical features designed for modern cinema rigs.

The original lens is the SMC TAKUMAR 1:2/55, manufactured by Asahi Optical Co. in Japan during the 1970s. This SMC version was produced approximately 1973–1975 and represents one of the final generations of the classic M42 Takumar 55mm family. It uses a 6-element / 5-group optical formula and Asahi’s Super-Multi-Coating, developed to improve contrast and resistance to flare compared with earlier Takumar generations.

For this TerPhoto cine conversion, the lens has been fully cleaned, adjusted and re-lubricated. The aperture mechanism has been de-clicked, allowing smooth, continuous iris adjustment during video recording. Two cine-style follow-focus gears are installed: one for precise manual focusing and another for aperture/iris control. This makes the lens considerably easier to integrate into a follow-focus based cinema setup.

The original M42 lens has been adapted and precisely adjusted for Canon EF mount. It is a manual-focus, manual-aperture lens and covers a full-frame 35mm sensor, making it suitable for compatible Canon EF cinema and DSLR bodies as well as mirrorless cinema cameras when used with the appropriate EF adapter.

The custom front setup includes an 80mm OD cine lens hood, helping the lens integrate more naturally with cinema accessories and matte-box-oriented rigs.

Glass Condition: Glass is in good vintage condition. There is very minor age-related wear on the optical surfaces, typical for a lens of this age. These minor signs do not affect the final image under normal shooting conditions.

Body Condition: Good vintage condition with normal cosmetic signs of previous use visible on the barrel and components. Please examine the detailed photographs for the exact cosmetic condition. The lens has been serviced and prepared for professional use.

At 55mm on full frame, this Takumar provides a natural perspective that works especially well for portraits, interviews, narrative filmmaking, close-ups, music videos, commercials and character-driven cinematography. Rather than the highly corrected rendering of many modern lenses, it offers the organic character and classic rendering that make vintage Japanese optics attractive to cinematographers.

🎥 Why Choose This Lens?

The SMC Takumar 55mm F2 is an excellent option for filmmakers looking for genuine 1970s Japanese glass rather than a modern lens designed to imitate a vintage look. Its 55mm focal length is particularly useful for portraits, interviews and medium close-ups on full frame. TerPhoto’s cine modification adds a de-clicked aperture, dual follow-focus gears, 80mm OD front hood and Canon EF adaptation, while the full cleaning, adjustment and re-lubrication prepare the mechanical system for practical filmmaking use. You get authentic Takumar character together with the controls expected on a modern manual cinema rig.
