🎬 Meyer-Optik Görlitz Oreston 50mm F1.8 Cine Mod – Anamorphic-Style Oval Bokeh – Canon EF

A professionally modified Meyer-Optik Görlitz Oreston 50mm F1.8 vintage prime lens, prepared by TerPhoto for cinematography, filmmaking and professional video production. This conversion combines the distinctive rendering of classic East German Meyer optics with practical cine-oriented modifications for modern camera workflows.

The lens has been modified with a neutral oval aperture/bokeh effect, giving out-of-focus highlights an anamorphic-inspired oval shape while retaining a conventional spherical optical system. Unlike a true anamorphic lens, the image does not require de-squeezing. For an anamorphic-inspired presentation, simply crop or add 2.35:1 cinematic black bars during post-production.

The aperture mechanism has been de-clicked, allowing smooth, continuous iris adjustments during recording. Two follow-focus gears are installed – one for precise manual focusing and another for aperture control – making the lens much easier to integrate into a cinema rig, follow-focus system or geared lens setup.

The original vintage lens has been fully cleaned, mechanically adjusted and re-lubricated. It has also been professionally adapted and adjusted for Canon EF mount operation. The lens provides full-frame sensor coverage, making it suitable for Canon EF full-frame cinema and DSLR systems as well as many mirrorless cinema/video cameras when used with an appropriate EF adapter.

Glass is in good vintage condition. There is very minor age-related wear on the optical surfaces, typical for a vintage lens of this period. These minor signs of use do not affect the final image. The lens body also shows normal cosmetic signs associated with its age and previous use. Please inspect the listing photographs for the exact cosmetic condition of this individual lens.

The cine modification includes a large 80mm OD lens hood/front assembly, giving the lens a more cinema-oriented profile and making it practical for professional rig configurations.

A Piece of East German Optical History

The Meyer-Optik Görlitz Oreston 50mm F1.8 belongs to the classic generation of East German photographic optics developed for Praktica-era cameras. The Oreston design was calculated in the early 1960s, with series production beginning around 1963. Its optical construction is a classic 6-element, 4-group Double-Gauss-type design, created as a fast and affordable standard lens and developed from ideas found in Meyer-Optik’s earlier Domiron.

The Oreston name disappeared following the integration of Meyer-Optik Görlitz into the Pentacon organization. During the early 1970s, the design continued under the familiar Pentacon 50mm F1.8 name and became one of the most widely produced East German standard-lens families. This cine modification therefore starts with a genuine vintage Meyer optical design and transforms it into a practical filmmaking tool while preserving its original optical character.

🎥 Why Choose This Lens?

The Oreston 50mm F1.8 is an excellent choice for filmmakers who want something different from the clinically clean rendering of modern cinema glass. Its vintage East German optical design gives footage an unmistakably classic character, while the neutral oval bokeh modification adds an anamorphic-inspired visual signature without requiring a true anamorphic workflow or de-squeezing. The fast F1.8 aperture works well for available-light shooting and shallow depth of field, while the 50mm focal length provides a highly versatile normal perspective on full-frame cameras. With a de-clicked aperture, dual follow-focus gears, Canon EF adaptation and full-frame coverage, this lens combines vintage optical character with significantly improved usability for modern narrative filmmaking, music videos, interviews, commercials and experimental cinematography.
